The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Bishop John Onaiyekan, has identified with the Re-branding Nigeria Campaign which is gaining momentum in the country.
Bishop Onaiyekan, who is also the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), gave his support during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, in Abuja on Monday.
He acknowledged that the task before the Minister was a major one because if the people were not properly informed about government activities and how they affect them, they will not be able to buy into the initiatives.
On the skepticism being expressed by some individual on the campaign, Bishop Onaiyekan said this is natural because the people’s fingers had been burnt a few times. He added that people’s skepticisms could however be dispelled if the campaign succeeds in achieving it objectives.
Onaiyekan explained that his support for the Campaign is hinged on the need to tell the rest of the world the truth about the good qualities of Nigeria.
Professor Akunyili described His Grace’s visit and acceptance to join the campaign as a morale booster and energizer. She referred to the concept of Rebranding as that of attitudinal change which she said was what the Bishop propagates at all times.
She reiterated government’s commitment to the provision of critical infrastructure and said that the rebranding platform will be used to say who “We really are as Nigerians”, as the country’s numerous contributions to world events and issues are not known and heard of because Nigerians are not talking about them.
