The South Western part of Nigeria at the weekend officially joined the ongoing Rebranding project as Ondo State played host to Information and Communications Minister, Professor Dora Akunyili and her team.
Speaking on arrival at the Akure Airport,the Minister said the Rebranding project had already been launched in the North East and South East; explaining that she chose Ondo State to flag off the South West programme because of its abundant human and natural resources.
According to the Minister, there is the need for love in the country, re-orientation and a sense of patriotism, as it is only when these are achieved that the world will be ready to listen to the nation’s beautiful stories.
She said her presence in the State was to share the good news with the people that Nigeria is a great nation with good people, and that Nigerians are hardworking, kind and intelligent and have great people scattered all over the countries of the world.
The Minister said, Nigeria having made a lot of sacrifices to fight for the good of Africa including contributing towards the liberation of some African countries, needs to be given her due respect by those countries and across Europe.
Professor Akunyili said though the Re-branding Nigeria project is a government initiative, it is also people oriented. She therefore urged the people to whole heartedly accept the programme, as it beckons on all to imbibe the nation’s cultural values.
At the Government House, Akure, Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko described Prof. Akunyili as a woman of substance and principle whose appointment as Minister in charge of Information was not by accident but well thought of saying “Mr. President had made no mistake at all in picking her to man the affairs of the ministry.”
Governor Mimiko who noted that though there are so many brands on the corridors of power in Nigeria today, Professor Akunyili is one of the credible and reliable hands ready to make Nigeria go where it is supposed to go, stressing that the Minister had demonstrated this virtue while heading NAFDAC.
The Governor admitted that many people all over the country including himself, who were skeptical about the Re-branding programme now believe that it is a project capable of moving the country towards a positive direction and called on all Nigerians to support the programme.
Dr. Mimiko particularly thanked President Umaru Musa Yar,Adua for allowing the rule of law to prevail in the country stating that this is another aspect of Re-branding the system and the country as a whole.
During the flag off, the Minister presented Re-branding souvenirs such as umbrellas, posters and badges to the State Governor.
