Goodluck JonathanThe Acting President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has said that Federal Government is taking the welfare of its employees seriously and will entertain no delays in service delivery to those who serve government.

Speaking on Thursday when he flagged-off the Group Life Insurance Scheme for Federal Public Servants in Abuja, Dr. Jonathan assured that the scheme which was inaugurated in 2004 would henceforth cover all employees of the Federal Government.

He stated that “Government will not shirk its statutory responsibility of meeting the expectations of its workforce and their families will not be left to suffer in the event of unexpected and unfortunate departure of their bread-winners who are in the service of our nation.”

While calling on the private sector and all employers of labour to adopt the scheme for their employees as stated in the Pension Reform Act (2004), Dr. Jonathan urged the Insurance industry to play vital role in the growth and stability of the country’s National Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said, “We are determined to ensure the deepening of a robust and responsive Insurance culture as a means of mitigating risk.  Insurance operators must therefore rise to the challenge of providing services that engender public confidence by shunning malpractices.”

Dr. Jonathan advised the regulators of the industry to live up to their responsibilities by monitoring and weeding out those individuals and institutions who are adept at bringing the Insurance Industry to disrepute.

In his remarks, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Stephen Oronsaye, said Section 9 (3) of the Pension Reform Act 2004 provides that employers should maintain life insurance policy in favour of the employees for a minimum of three times the annual total emolument of the employee.

He disclosed that in order to address past challenges experienced in the implementation of the scheme, Government has decided to ensure the standardization of rates in the Group Life Insurance for Public Servants.
