His Royal Highness, the Tor-Tiv and the Chairman of the Benue State Traditional Council of Chiefs, Dr. Alfred Orchivirigh Akawe Torkula, has declared support for the Re-branding Nigeria project.
The Royal Father made the pledge on behalf of himself and his subjects when Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, paid him a courtesy visit in his palace at Gboko as part of her engagements during the 40th National Council on Information and Communications meeting holding in the Benue State capital, Makurdi.
The Tor-Tiv described the Re-branding Nigeria project as a very big one in the sense that the mentality that everything Nigerian was inferior had sank so much in the people’s psyche that it would require such a concrete project to uproot.
Dr. Torkula appealed that the project should be spread so widely that even children should know that Nigeria means business this time around.
In an earlier remark, Professor Akunyili told His Royal Highness that each time she came to Benue State; she did so with nostalgia having been born in Makurdi 55 years ago.
She said that they were in Makurdi to brainstorm on how to move the affairs of Information and Communications in the country to the next level.
Referring to Information as power, and the Ministry as the soul of the nation, Professor Akunyili solicited support for the propagation of the Re-branding Nigeria campaign through committed sense of patriotism and attitudinal change and presentation of good stories of many people and things that abound in the country.
She reaffirmed that President Yar’ Adua’s Administration was committed to provision of concrete deliverables under the Seven-Point Agenda adding that if we failed to re-brand this time, we might not be able to do so again.
The Minister was later decorated in the white and black fabric which is the symbol of the Tiv nation signifying black Africans and peace.
