Stakeholders in the Lubricant Sector of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria have been reassured of the Federal Government’s pledge to initiate proactive measures to ensure a standardized production of lubricants in the country.
Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Rilwanu Lukman who was speaking at a stakeholders meeting on Lubricant Market in Abuja pointed out that the machinery to achieve this objective had been put in place, saying, “The Department of Petroleum Resources and Standards Organization of Nigeria were effectively collaborating to achieve a template for standard production of lubricants.”
Once this is achieved, the Minister added, Nigerians would be saved from health hazards posed by adulterated and unwholesome lubricants sold in bottles by roadside sellers, environmental degradation and frequent damage to industrial machines and vehicles.
While acknowledging the excellent collaboration between the Ministry and stakeholders towards charting a way forward for the lubricant sector, Dr. Lukman stated that Nigeria was endowed with the basic materials to produce base oil, an important ingredient for processing lubricants. He however observed that Nigeria would only achieve this if the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemicals Company started working, aided by the peace in the Niger Delta region due to the amnesty and post amnesty programmes of the Federal Government.
Speaking earlier, the Senior Technical Assistant to the Minister, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim recalled that the Petroleum Minister had inaugurated different Committees for the modernization of the oil and gas industry.
The meeting witnessed a presentation on communication strategy designed to enlighten and sensitize ultimate users of lubricants and the general public on the dangers of patronizing sellers of bottled base oil, its damaging effects on their vehicles, generators and industrial machines.
Also present at the meeting were the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, Special Adviser to the President on Petroleum Matters, Mr. Emmanuel Egbogah and the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Elizabeth Emuren.
