Printers in Nigeria have been charged to exploit their vantage position to effectively check fraudsters by refusing to collude with them in the printing of fake labels, certificates and even currency thereby contributing their own quota to the fight against corruption.
Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili gave the charge on Tuesday when members of the Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria (CIPPON) led by the President, Mr. Aderemi Mohammed Lawal paid her a courtesy visit.
According to the Minister, most fraudulent activities were committed or facilitated by Printers because of the unique nature of their profession and she therefore charged the Institute to have a comprehensive list of all registered printers in Nigeria, and also reflect such on its website within three months.
The Minister had recalled her earlier directives to Agencies and Parastatals of the ministry to have a vibrant website and stressed its importance as a veritable source of information dissemination to the printers and the people of the country.
Aside from the need to ensure high quality and professionalism, CIPPON was also enjoined to visit the INEC Chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu with a view to presenting a proposal for the printing of electoral materials for the 2011 General elections in Nigeria.
Earlier, the President of CIPPON highlighted some of their functions since the inauguration of the institute in 2008. He also solicited the assistance of the Federal Government for subvention and adequate enlightenment of Nigerians on their programmes and activities.
CIPPON according to Lawal would do everything possible to tour paper mills, have viable printing press in the country and reduce the importation of printing materials thereby saving foreign exchange for Nigeria.
The visit was witnessed by the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Henry Angulu, Directors and top government Officials of the Ministry.
