Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin has called on health practitioners in the country to be diligent and professional in the discharge of their duties to patients.
The Minister made the call at the inauguration of new Boards of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions, Regulatory Bodies and Agencies in Abuja.
“We must now begin to visit the full weight of the law on every erring member of our profession”, the Minister said. He called for maximum sanctions to be applied to all professionals who refuse or neglect to abide by the requirements of their oaths.
He tasked the new board members to wake up to challenges of collective responsibility by ensuring adequate and proper documentation in the discharge of their duties. He further decried the unethical attitudes of health professionals especially in the aiding of fraudulent practices as such unethical dispositions, he warned, do not promote the strengthening of the health system.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong used the occasion to call for stiffer penalties for health professionals who engage and aid unethical practices, describing such activities as crude and criminal.
Four Boards of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions, Regulatory Bodies and Agencies were inaugurated as follows:
1. Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria with Mr. Sani Ibrahim as Chairman
2. Dental Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria with Mrs. Grace Dhalakama as Chairman
3. Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria with Mr. G.A. Sanni as Chairman
4. Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria with Professor Abdullahi A. Zuru as Chairman
The Board members speaking through their representatives assured the Ministers of their commitment to the realization of the Seven Point Agenda as it concerns the health sector and their willingness to carry out the marching orders of the Ministers.
